Background

ATHENA (http://www.networkathena.org/) was created to advance gender equity and human rights through the HIV response, working at the intersection of HIV, women’s rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender-based violence. With a founding retreat in 2005, building on work continuing since 2000, ATHENA was formally launched in 2006. ATHENA continues to play a policy formulation, capacity-strengthening, and network-convening role, working with partners at a community, national, regional, and global level.

The ATHENA Initiative is a conduit of learning and innovation, providing thought leadership and technical support through a global team with current administrative headquarters in Namibia. The ATHENA Network is a global network that brings together activists, researchers, policymakers, community-based organizations, and broader civil society, including networks of women living with HIV.

The two arms of ATHENA work in concert to deliver our vision of realizing gender equality and achieving global health. Our core team is currently based in the USA, Eastern and Southern Africa, bringing our expertise across policy development, participatory action research, advocacy, programming, youth involvement, meaningful engagement, leadership development, and consultation while ensuring and advancing local accountability.

ATHENA currently operates from a virtual Secretariat comprising a small team of staff and consultants. ATHENA’s administrative home is in Windhoek Namibia, and it maintains deep partner relationships across East and Southern Africa with a broader global footprint across Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. ATHENA is governed by a regionally diverse Board of Advisors, composed of individuals representing a range of professional backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences of the HIV epidemic, as well as technical expertise.

ATHENA Podcast

ATHENA seeks to expand its advocacy approaches and tools for engaging and amplifying the voices, expertise and the work of adolescent girls and young women on SRHR and HIV advocacy, especially as relates to COVID-19 response and recovery efforts through launching a podcast.

The podcast will facilitate and augment existing advocacy and movement-building efforts by the network and will specifically aid in documenting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. The podcast series will support profiling the work and the stories of girls and young women at the frontline of COVID-19 response and recovery efforts in their countries and across the region(Africa with a focus on Eastern and Southern Africa). It will also be a platform that will enable ATHENA to leverage storytelling as a powerful tool for engaging AGYW, closing the gaps in access to policymaking and decision-making spaces, and profiling #HerStory during a pandemic.

We are looking for a feminist podcast production manager to support us with this novel experience and contribute to our broad vision to amplify the voices and experiences of AGYW who are paving the way towards a feminist future.

Podcast production manager’s responsibilities:

  • Set up and manage virtual podcast recordings.

  • Work with the host(s) to set up the virtual platform and equipment or other facilities for ATHENA to launch a podcast

  • Brief guests on technical modalities for virtual podcasting recording.

  • Record, edit, mix, and sound design each podcast episode.

  • Establish and implement audio recording best practices.

  • Manage and store files and data for the show, under global best practices for data protection.

  • Advise on podcasting best practices.

  • Meet deadlines consistently and publish flawless final audio ready for promotion across several virtual platforms.

     

 

  • Have at least two years of experience in podcast production and editing.

  • Practical production management skills

  • Have experience working with feminist networks and network contexts

  • Ability to work independently and in a team, managing and balancing different priorities

  • Demonstrate fluency in English Language and exceptional communication skills (both writing and speaking). Be fluent in written and oral English language communication skills.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of feminist principles.

  • Have experience and/or knowledge of sexual reproductive health and rights of AGYW in Eastern and Southern Africa.

  • Be a proactive self-starter, with the ability to work independently, collaborate effectively with a diverse virtual team, and solve problems.

  • Can balance detail orientedness with big picture thinking.
